At the age of 17 he joined Dundee in 1957, combining playing with his job as a miner. Later he went full-time and enjoyed unprecedented success as Dundee won the League Championship in 1962, and the following season reached the semi-final of the European Cup.
On 14th May 1965, `Shuggie` joined Dunfermline after a £10,000 transfer, brought in to replace Jackie Sinclair who had moved to Leicester City.
As well as being one of the team that brought the Scottish Cup back in 1968, he played in most of the Pars European ties. He also scored some memorable goals including two at Ibrox on Christmas Day 1965 to give the Pars their first ever win there. He hit a hat-trick against Raith Rovers on New Years Day 1968 and the opening goal against Celtic in the famous victory over the European champions at Parkhead in the First Round of the 68 Scottish Cup.
Hugh left Dunfermline in 1971 to join Arbroath but was forced to give up on medical grounds. He took on the job as trainer at Gayfield before moving back to Dens Park as Dundee`s Reserve Team Coach. Later he was to make a name for himself as a coach with Boldklub in Denmark.
