Central defender who began his career with Hartlepool. After a successful spell with Shrewsbury, he moved on to Ipswich Town in 1988. For seven years he was virtually ever present, playing around 300 games.
In 1995 he moved on to Blackpool and in 1998 he was signed by The Pars but only played a couple of games before moving to Mansfield Town on loan. Released at the end of the season he signed a permanent deal with Mansfield.
