Alex Ferguson gave Billy Abercromby his St Mirren debut in 1976 and he remained at Love Street for 12 years, the highpoint of which was captaining St Mirren to the 1987 Scottish Cup victory.

A renowned hard man, Abercromby was sent off for three red card offences in one match in 1986. He was signed by Jim Leishman to bolster his side that had just won the First Division title in 1989, but after a promising start he failed to retain his place and moved to Cowdenbeath in February 1990.

He scored one goal, against Raith Rovers in a League Cup tie.
