Although he`d played most of his football at Ibrox as a right back, it was on the right side of midfield that he did most of his damage for Dunfermline.
His great energy and vision saw him win three Scotland caps and four Scotland ‘B` caps while at East End Park. His three international appearances while at Dunfermline were against Poland, Latvia and Sweden.
Barry was great success at Dunfermline and played for them in the 2004 Scottish Cup Final against Celtic. In a five year spell, Barry made over 200 appearances and was capped by Scotland. before being signed former boss Calderwood who had since moved to Pittodrie. Barry moved to Aberdeen in July 2005 for a reported fee of £250,000.
He had left some great memories not least of which was when he scored an ‘Archie Gemmell goal` against Inverness in 2004, ensuring Dunfermline`s participation in a Scottish Cup Final for the first time in 35 years. Barry Nicholson made 206 appearances for The Pars, scoring 30 goals. He is one of only 40 players to have reached 200 appearances.
Preston North End lured Barry to Deepdale in 2008, for a four year stint after he moved to the coast to join Fleetwood Town, for a season. In 2013 he moved back to Scotland to join Kilmarnock, hanging up his boots in 2014.
In season 2024-2025 Barry was Callum Davidson`s assistant at Queens Park.
