Alexander Webster Hall spent only a few months at Dunfermline but went on to enjoy a long and successful career in England.
Hall made his Pars debut as a trialist left back on 10th November 1928 in a home Second Division match against Boness. The 1-0 win was to provide Dunfermline with their first shut-out of the season and Hall was promptly signed from his club Wallyford Bluebell just after his 20th birthday.
A strong and speedy left-back, he was a regular from that point on in what was otherwise an unforgettable season, never missing a game until the final match of the season.
Sunderland, who had been tracking the player since his juvenile days, had him watched three times before finally offering Dunfermline £750 for his signature following a 2-1 win over Clydebank in the penultimate league match of the season on 20th April 1929 at East End Park. This gave him just enough time to make his Sunderland debut the same season, a 4-0 defeat to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on 4th May 1929.
Hall spent ten years at Roker Park, helping the club win the League Championship in 1935/36 and the FA Cup the following season. In his time at Sunderland, he made 235 appearances with only one goal, and led the club to victory in the 1936 FA Charity Shield and 1937 FA Cup Final.
The Second World War saw him move to Hibernian, initially as a guest player then a permanent signing, where he played over 200 wartime games then made one appearance in the 1946/47 season. He took up a coaching role with Hibernian that lasted five years and then went to work with Sliema Wanderers in Malta.
In all he made 24 first team appearances for Dunfermline, 23 of which were in the league. He made one appearance in the Scottish Cup, a 3-1 defeat to Cowdenbeath.
