Arguably Dunfermline`s most skilful player of all, Jock Stein introduced Alex Edwards on 19th March 1962, when, at the age of 16 years and 5 days he became one of the youngest ever outfield player in Scottish football.
He gave the performance of his young life in Dunfermline`s 6-2 win over Valencia in December 1962. Alex mesmerised defences helping Dunfermline to their highest ever league position, to further European success, and to two Scottish Cup Finals, the second of which Dunfermline won in 1968.
During his later years, Alex fell out with the manager leading to his transfer to Hibernian in October 1971 for a fee of £13,000 - what was described as `the sale of the century`. Unsurprisingly Edwards became a regular in one of Hibs` best ever teams. After playing 215 games and scoring twelve goals, Alex was transferred to Arbroath where he saw out his playing days before retiring from professional football.
He won Schoolboy, Amateur and Under 23 caps but to Scotland`s shame, was never included in the senior side.
