A solid and experienced defender, Jim Leishman signed him for the Pars while he was still Caretaker Manager in October 1983.

Joining Dundee United as a youngster from Larkhall Thistle in 1974, Allan spent 4 years at Tannadice and made around 30 appearances. Alan made his professional debut with Dundee United in season 1974/75 then later transferred to Raith Rovers.

He became Raith Rovers record signing in 1978 when started a six year stint with The Rovers. He made over 150 appearances in a lengthy career at Starks Park before coming to Dunfermline.

Jim Leishman saw him as the man to tighten the defence and provide some experience, and he played an important role in the early days of Jim Leishman`s management.

Although still a signed player at the start of season 1985-86, the McCathie-Young partnership had been established and there was no place in the side for Alan. He left Dunfermline and returned to the junior ranks with Glenrothes in November 1985.
