Willie Forbes emerged from the obscurity of Scottish regional football to enjoy a long career at the top level in England.

After making his debut as a trialist in a 3-2 win over Raith Rovers on 3rd January 1942, Willie went on to spend nearly five years at East End Park, developing into a very talented wing-half who was strong in defence and quick-witted in attack.

Pushed up to inside-forward in 1945/46 season, his sharpness in the box brought him a ten-minute hat-trick in a 6-1 defeat of Arbroath.

In September 1946 he made a £1,500 move to Wolves and three years later joined Preston, helping the club to within goal average of the 1952/53 league title. The following season, he played alongside Jimmy Baxter and Willie Cunningham, former team-mates of Willie`s at Dunfermline, in Preston`s FA Cup Final defeat by West Bromwich Albion.
