James started his football at his local club, Blackburn United. He was five when he first got involved there and worked his way up. He had spells at Hearts from age of 8, Livingston, and then Hibs for three years before joining Dunfermline at under 17 level from Livingston. He claimed that his most influential coach was Jamie Brown at Livingston
Scored against Peterhead in his first team debut on 27th September 2014 but all five of his Dunfermline appearances were off the bench.
