He made his debut for Odd in 1966, and stayed there until he joined Rosenborg BK in 1970.

In 1973 a friendly Dunfermline played against their twin town featured a star performance in the visitors` goal, of a giant goalkeeper. This was Geir Karlsen and in the next season, he signed for Dunfermline.

Geir was 6`4" tall and built very powerfully. He was a very imposing presence and quickly became a Cult Hero for Pars fans. In those days Pars Fans were not very experienced in foreign lingos and Geir became known as Thon Carlsberg.

He really commanded his penalty box and was an excellent keeper, which was just as well, as the team was not enjoying one of its better spells. Geir left in 1975, following the team`s failure to make the SPL cut. Karlsen made a total of 67 appearances for The Pars.

He returned to Norway with VÃ¥lerenga and retired in 1984. He had a prolific International career making 13 under 21 and 32 full appearances for his country. He retired as a player in 1984. Geir sadly died after illness on 26th July 2024 aged 75.
