Gregor was born in Falkirk on 31st March 1990. He was a youth player with his home town team before signing junior with Armadale Thistle in 2008. Two years later he moved on to Bathgate Thistle. Another two years and he stepped up to sign senior forms with Airdrie, where he made 66 appearances during his two seasons there.

When Buchanan joined Dunfermline from Airdrieonians in May 2014 it was his first time as a full timer. He went on to make 36 appearances and scored 3 goals, one on his debut in the league cup at Annan Athletic. He left the club at the end of a very trying and poor season and signed for Dumbarton a few weeks later.

During his two seasons at Dumbarton he was again almost ever present. His excellent form with The Sons led St Mirren to sign him but he did not establish himself and after a handful of games spent the rest of the season with Livingston.

Cappielow beckoned and another successful season with Morton for 2018/19. The following season saw him return to his roots by signing for Falkirk. After a reasonable run, he was on the move again and spent season 2020/21 with Queen of the South. The following season, the nomad was on the move again, this time back to Dumbarton, where he established himself as captain. Last season (2022/23) saw The Sons miss out on promotion and the re-model did not include Gregor.

He started the 2023-2024 season with Stenhousemuir.
