Played with Kennoway under the instruction of coach Bob McPhail from age four to ten before going to Celtic from U11 to U15 and joined Dunfermline at U15 level. Represented Fife Schools at U14. Won a winners medal in Dunfermline team that won the Reserve League Cup for season 2009-10. Captain of the Dunfermline team that got to the SFA Youth Cup Final in 2012-13.
Byrne joined the Dunfermline youth set up from the Celtic youths in 2008. Byrne broke into the first team in 2012 and went on to establish himself in the teams midfield over the next four seasons. He was surprisingly released after winning the title in 2015/16.
He moved to Livingston on a free transfer and went on to consecutive promotions from League One to the Scottish Premiership over the next two seasons.
