A prolific goalscorer at juvenile level, Bob Syme was a strong-running centre forward with a powerful shot who made an explosive impact shortly after signing in 1928/29.

In an incredible five days over New Year, the twenty-year-old scored hat tricks in three successive matches. Going on to net a total of seventeen league goals that season, he followed that with 42 during 1929/30, a figure surpassed by only one other player in the club`s history. His six hat tricks equalled Bobby Skinner`s single-season record for Dunfermline.

These feats earned Bob a £750 transfer to Manchester City in August 1930, but a perceived lack of pace ensured a frustrating time in England, making only eleven league appearances for City before a short spell with Burnley.

Re-signed by Dunfermline towards the end of 1934/35, Bob proved his worth as an extremely versatile member of the team, capable of playing in every position including goalkeeper.
