A talented youngster signed by Sandy Archibald during the war, Bert Kinnell made his first appearance for the Pars as a trialist centre-forward in an Emergency League fixture against Stenhousemuir on 13th April 1940. Scoring in the 4-2 win, he played twice more as a trialist and four more goals convinced Dunfermline that the £40 for his transfer was quite a good deal.

In February 1942 he was called up for military service and, apart from the odd appearance when granted leave, it was to be December 1946 before he became a first-team regular again.

Lively and elusive, Bert was deadlier than ever in the penalty area and four hat-tricks helped push his league average up to very nearly a goal per game. This inevitably attracted interest from other clubs and on 3rd March 1948 Bert was sold to Partick Thistle for a club record fee of £6,000.
