Signed from Hill of Beath Star for the princely sum of £5, Willie Kelly was a tough, no-nonsense defender who was also skilful with the ball at his feet. Powerfully built, he was an inspirational player and strong in the air without being particularly tall.

He was signed by Airdrie for £4,500 to replace Frank Brennan, who became a Scottish international at Newcastle; Airdrie supporters considered Kelly the better player.

Transferred to Blackburn Rovers in 1951, Willie went on to make more than 200 appearances for the Ewood Park club. Died 1996, Blackburn.
