School teacher George Duthie was 25 years old when he joined Dunfermline but had never made a first team appearance in senior football, having spent five years in Hibs` reserves.

Converted to centre-half by Bobby Ancell, George made his debut on 20th February 1954 in a home defeat by Morton. Appointed skipper the following season, he led the side back to the top flight for the first time in eighteen years. One of the club`s most consistent players, George needed all of his determination when he lost his position and the captaincy to Harry Colville but, if anything, he became even better at full-back.

His versatility meant he could play on either the right or left with equal assurance and he missed only one league match in two seasons. His quiet resolve saw him become known as the best penalty taker in the game, scoring no fewer than fourteen in 1957/58 to create a British record.
