Working in the pits as a `Bevan Boy`, Jimmy made his debut in a North Eastern League match at Aberdeen on 1 August 1943 and instantly established himself as a first team regular in spite of his tender years.
It was when he was pushed up to inside-forward in the autumn of 1944 that his delicate, elusive ball-playing ability was fully exploited.
Dunfermline had already turned down some serious offers before Barnsley agreed to pay £2,000 for Jimmy just after the start of the 1945/46 season, a club record for the Pars. He went on to enjoy a hugely successful career in England with Barnsley and Preston.
