Regarded by many Athletic supporters as one of the finest footballers ever to wear the black and white.

Alex Smith was signed by Andy Dickson from Dunbar United for the princely sum of £83, and during his eight years at East End Park went on to make 298 appearances, scoring 98 goals.

Alex made his Pars debut in September 1958 against Raith Rovers, a game which was eventually abandoned, and went on to play in some of the most famous Pars games played. He played in 23 European ties including the games against Ujpest Doza, Everton, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao, and scored five goals. As well as playing in the 1961 Scottish Cup Final, he also played in the 1965 final against Celtic.

His performance in the 1961 Cup Final was, for a 20 year-old, quite outstanding but, perhaps not surprisingly, some of his best performances were in Europe, where the style of play was perfectly suited to this.

The subject of much transfer speculation, he finally left to join Rangers in August 1966 for a Scottish record fee of £51,000. In 310 appearances for the Pars, Alex scored a fantastic 98 goals, the fourth highest figure in the club`s history.

After football Alex was landlord of the pub at Coaledge and a regular at East End Park.
