John gained experience with Hibs and Queen of the South before moving to East End Park, where he quickly became a favourite of the fans. Although he just touched six feet tall, John was powerful in the air and always posed a threat in the opposition`s box, scoring ten goals for Dunfermline.
His performances in 1978/79 earned John a nomination in the Second Division Players` Player of the Year. As well as aerial prowess, John was a strong tackler and extremely mobile for a centre defender.
Pat Stanton took over as manager and seen by the new management as "injury prone" John was handed a free transfer in December 1981 after making 160 appearances for Dunfermline.
