Willie Renton came to Dunfermline in 1968, having played for St Mirren and St Johnstone. He was signed by George Farm probably as a replacement for the departing Tom Callaghan.

He was an industrious and hard tackling midfielder, and was one of only three players to play in all eight Cup-Winners Cup matches in 1968/69. In his third season with the club, a row with manager George Farm saw him move to Chelmsford Town.

Following spells with non-league Chelmsford and Fourth Division Barrow, his career ended after a short period at Cowdenbeath.
