One of Jim McLean`s youngsters at Dundee United, where in a ten year spell from 1976 to 1986, he played in around 250 games at home and in Europe. Had a brief foray with Hibernian in 1986, before returning to Tannadice.
In 1987 he moved to Dunfermline. He played a total of 26 games for The Pars in 87/88 but left to join Dundee at the end of the season. 88/89 was to be his last playing season.
He was thrown into football management at Dundee United in 1995 and he was a coach with a number of clubs, including Dunfermline during Davie Hay`s tenure. Billy became a youth coach and manager at the Rangers Academy.
