He played 4 times for the Scotland Under 21 side in 1997/98 when with Kilmarnock.

Burke initially joined Dunfermline on loan from St Mirren, a move than was made permanent in July 2008. He helped the side to two consecutive third place finishes before assisting in the Championship winning team of 2010/11.

Former Kilmarnock team mate, Alex Burke was brought in by Jim McIntyre on a loan deal from St Mirren.

Alex has played for several Scottish clubs since leaving Kilmarnock after five years to join Falkirk in October 2000. Since then he has had spells at Clydebank, Berwick Rangers, Queen of the South and Ross County. At St Mirren he made 25 appearances .

Freed at the end of the 2010/11 campaign Burke signed for Ayr United but only played 6 times before retiring from football.
