Bowes signed from Falkirk junior team Gairdoch United Under 18s in 1991 and remained at the Pars until his departure to Forfar in 1995 after being released.
During his time at Dunfermline he gained one Scotland Under 21 cap against Denmark at Easter Road in a 3-0 victory, coming on as a substitute. Bowes returned to the junior ranks with Bathgate Thistle in 1999.
