Byrne joined from Shamrock Rovers in September 2003 and was a valuable player in assisting Dunfermline reach the 2004 Scottish Cup final. He scored his only goal for the club in that season`s quarter final tie against Partick Thistle.
Byrne fell out of favour in the 2004/05 season and followed former manager Calderwood to Aberdeen for a fee of £50k in January 2005.
Byrne played for Rep Of Ireland U21 and B Team scoring in a 1-1 draw with Scotland in the latter. Byrne went on to work as a personal trainer.
