Dunfermline lost 4-3 on penalties and exited the Fife Cup.
It was the U18s who undertook the Fife Cup tie against St Andrews United at Clayton Caravan Recreation Park on Wednesday evening. Sam Young, Andrew Tod, Ewan McLeod, Liam Hoggan and Freddie Rowe were joined by Academy players to take on a side containing former Pars youths Lewis Sawers, Kyle Sneddon and Owen Anthony.
It was an explosive start with a goal for each team within three minutes. The home side looked like they had the best of starts scoring in the second minute when Kyle SNEDDON rose to power in a corner from the left. Less than 90 seconds later Tod made the byeline to cut the ball back from the right and Jay SNODDY blasted in the equaliser top right. 1-1.
A mistake in defence allowed ANTHONY the opportunity to crash home the third goal of the evening in just the ninth minute. The response came in just the 15th minute. McLeod fed Tod who shot forcing the keeper to save but Jamie FINDLAY followed up to home home. 2-2
Kyle Davidson forced a save out of keeper Logan Halliday when meeting a Hoggan cross three minutes later. Sam Young headed home a Tod free kick from the left but the offside flag denied the night`s skipper. Davidson did all the hard work to work himself into a great shooting position in 27 minutes but sent his attempt over the St Andrews bar.
Action continued to flow up and down the park and Pars keeper Lewis Briggs got down to his left to hold a strong header as Sneddon got on the end of a dangerous Lewis Payne ball in from the right. At the other end Halliday pulled off a splendid save to turn away a fierce McLeod shot but in 42 minutes DAVIDSON took the initiative from a weak pass back and netted his opportunity putting the West Fifers ahead for the first time in the tie.
Half Time: St Andrews United 2 Dunfermline 3
When the second half kicked off it wasn`t long before there was another goal. In just its seventh minute a Pars clearance unluckily came back off Rowe leaving Ryan McMANUS to finish. 3-3
A great run from Davidson brushing off several challenges got the Pars no.9 in on the right side of the Saints box but 56th minute sub Liam Middleton was desperately unfortunate not to convert the cross at the far post.
Both teams introduced subs before in 73 minutes firstly, a Tod free kick played into the danger area in front of goal was really well defended and then when the keeper`s next clearance was charged down Tod was again unlucky to see the defence get his delivery away. More of Tod in 77 minutes firing a 20 yard free kick through the wall only for the keeper to parry away the shot.
Next Tom Milne`s tackle halted Tod`s run in from the left and the home side successfully defended the corner. Dunfermline`s defence was tested as St Andrews rallied but they almost paid the penalty as Tod broke on the counterattack but the keeper came out to bravely save at his feet.
Chances kept coming at both ends but the four minutes of added time came and went without any break to the deadlock. With the score 3-3 after 90 minutes the tie would be decided on penalties with Dunfermline taking the first:-
1 | Ewan McLeod gives keeper no chance 1-0
