Archives | James McPake 2022-2024
Following the departure of John Hughes, James McPake was appointed as First Team Manager on 24 May 2022. He would be in charge for 113 games until Christmas 2024.
James McPake was appointed manager of Dunfermline Athletic on 24th May 2022. He was in charge of Dunfermline Athletic for 113 games between May 2022 and his departure on 23rd December 2024. Under him the Pars won 51 games, drew 27 and lost 35 during which they scored 171 goals and conceded 127. With 180 points won his points per match ratio was 1.59.
James` greatest achievement was taking Dunfermline back to the Championship, winning the League One title in his first season in charge. That 2022-2023 season was record breaking in many ways as Dunfermline topped the table with 81 points, 14 clear of second placed, Falkirk. The first season back in the Championship Dunfermline finished sixth, level on points with Morton who had a marginally better goal difference but seven points short of a play off place.
When James was relieved of his duties Dunfermline had reached the half way point in the Championship campaign in ninth place. In the first 18 league games his team had picked up just 15 points and had won only four times. Goalscoring had become a problem, only finding the net 14 times in those 18 matches.
Not qualifying out of the group stage of the League Cup after three attempts particularly frustrated James. While he had successfully seen his side negotiate past Edinburgh City in the third round of the 2024-2025 Scottish Cup, his record in that cup revealed an third round exit to Raith in November 2023 and a fourth round defeat on penalties to Partick Thistle in January 2023.
Following a successful playing career with clubs in England and Scotland, James launched his coaching career at Dundee FC`s Academy before becoming First Team Manager in 2019.
James McPake played 254 senior matches at Livingston, Morton, Coventry City, Hibs and Dundee and once for Northern Ireland in 2012.
He retired from playing football in January 2018, and then started his coaching career in the Dundee youth system. He was appointed as the senior team manager in May 2019, and held this position until February 2022.
McPake led Dundee to promotion to the Scottish Premiership by winning through the Premiership play offs. At the end of that 2020-2021 season, he was awarded the SPFL Scottish Championship Manager of the Year. In his 106 matches in charge at Dens, Dundee won 46 times.
